The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the opulent streets of ancient Rome. Gaius Fabius, a skilled investigator, strode through the bustling marketplace. The murmur of the crowd was like a distant river, and the scent of fresh bread filled the air. He was on his way to investigate a murder that had sent shockwaves through the city.
As he arrived at the grand villa of Senator Lucius Marcellus, Gaius was greeted by the foreboding presence of Roman guards, their polished armor glinting in the fading light. He announced his arrival, and the heavy doors opened to reveal the opulent interior. A group of wealthy Romans, draped in fine silks and jewels, gathered in the atrium.
Senator Marcellus, a portly man with a sharp gaze, stepped forward, acknowledging Gaius with a nod. “You’ve come about the murder, I presume?”
Gaius nodded in response. “Yes, Senator. I’ve heard the details are quite… intriguing.”
The senator led Gaius into a dimly lit chamber, where the lifeless body of a young woman lay sprawled across a luxurious couch. Her raven-black hair was a stark contrast to her pale skin, and her lifeless eyes seemed to hold a haunting secret. It was clear she was of lower social status, and her presence in the senator’s villa was suspicious.
Gaius examined the scene, carefully noting the small details. “Tell me, Senator, who is she?”
Senator Marcellus shifted uncomfortably. “She was but a servant, and her name was Livia. The affair…
