Random Acts of Defiance

In the cracks of conformity,
Where shadows fear to tread,
Sparks of rebellion flicker,
Defiance rears its head.

A suit-clad banker pirouettes,
Through stuffy boardroom airs,
His tie a splash of neon pink,
Shocking unaware.

Graffiti blooms on subway walls,
In tongues long thought deceased,
Ancient words with modern sting,
Society’s wild yeast.

A traffic light blinks Morse code,
To cars in rush hour’s thrall,
Its message clear to those who see:
“Question. Resist. Stand tall.”

In quiet suburbs, lawn gnomes march,
Rearranged in dead of night,
A plastic revolution staged,
To neighbors’ fond delight.

Library books reshelve themselves,
Philosophy with smut,
Dewey’s system overthrown,
In literary strut.

Crosswalks painted rainbow hues,
By unseen hands at dawn,
Transform the monochrome of streets,
To pride flags brightly drawn.

A flash mob in the grocery store,
Breaks into opera song,
Aria of the common folk,
Subverting right from wrong.

Parkour athletes vault and leap,
O’er fences marked “Keep Out”,
Their bodies fluid poetry,
A freedom-seeking route.

In office cubicles, Post-its bloom,
With Dadaist refrains,
Nonsense verses challenging,
The corporate world’s chains.

Hackers plant easter eggs of joy,
In stern official sites,
Dancing cats and memes appear,
Where legalese once bites.

These random acts of defiance,
Small ripples in life’s stream,
Remind us all that underneath,
We’re wilder than we seem.

For in these moments, brief but bright,
Of mischief and dissent,
We glimpse a world less tamed, less trite,
Where spirits roam unchained.

So let your inner rebel play,
In ways both big and small,
For in defiance, we may find,
The truest “us” of all.
